Following the Water Upstream

Laura Canali, Alberto Pinter

Water and energy are interconnected elements that are inextricably linked. Italy has a hydroelectric heritage that accounts for one-third of our country’s renewable energy, but the drastic changes in how water becomes available at altitude—such as the increase in extreme events, both droughts and thunderstorms—are having a significant impact on production.

To avoid losing freshwater sources, it is essential to understand the pathways of rivers and to analyze the critical issues clearly. "Following the Water Upwards" serves as a point of reflection on the waterways of Trentino Alto-Adige, presenting an unprecedented dialogue between a cartographer and an engineer.

Laura Canali Cartographer, has been collaborating with the magazine Limes since 1993 and with the Scuola di Limes. She has collaborated with: L’Espresso, I Viaggi di Repubblica, National Geographic Italia, Casa Editrice Paravia and Pearson, Repubblica TV, the World Bank, Mondadori, Barilla Foundation, Società Dante Alighieri, Rai Storia, and Inarch.

Alberto Pinter Head of technical and administrative development of the plants at Hydro Dolomiti Energia, the company specialized in hydroelectric production of the Dolomiti Energia Group—included this year among the Leader in Sustainability 2023 by Il Sole 24 Ore—one of the main Italian multiutilities and one of the leading producers of clean and environmentally friendly hydroelectric energy in Italy.
