What culture, what politics

Anna Chiara Cimoli, Michele Lanzinger, Cristina Alga, Emanuela Zilio

In a changing world that increasingly shows its contradictions and complexities, we need points of reference. In looking for them, one can either cling to tradition or seek new energies. What is certain is that one appeals to culture. However, from within, what value do the spaces of culture feel they have? What is lacking for cultural entities to claim a real political role? If the places of culture were to disappear, would we still be able to imagine the future?

Anna Chiara Cimoli, art historian and museologist, teaches at the University of Bergamo. She focuses on social museology and participatory practices, with an emphasis on the dynamics of migration, identity and racialisation. Since 2020, she has been curator at MUBIG, the community museum in Milan's Greco district.

Cristina Alga was born in Palermo where she lives and works. Project manager and activist, she works on cultural and social policies and practices, regeneration of the living environment and cultural participation. She is the director of the Mare Memoria Viva urban ecomuseum.

Emanuela Zilio has been EU project manager since 2000. She has a background in both the humanities and technical-scientific disciplines and collaborates as a researcher and lecturer with the University of Turin, the Politecnico in Milan, and the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin. In 2022 she co-founded the M-Cube Foundation and in 2020 the Viso A Viso community cooperative (Ostana - CN).

Michele Lanzinger is an Italian geologist and anthropologist, founder and director from 2013 to 2024 of the MUSE museum in Trento, after being the director of the former Tridentine Museum of Natural Sciences, since 1992. He has been president of ICOM Italy since 4 December 2022.
