Nicola Galli

Nicola Galli works on body research, stated in artistic pieces and devices that ranges from choreography to performance, from body installations to graphics.

Galli starts as agonist gymnast and then approaches to the body research at Teatro Nucleo (Ferrara), studying the languages of physical theatre and contemporary dance.

In 2010 he starts a personal research focused on shape and definition of the “stratification” and “landscape” concepts in connection with the body, that develops in installations and choreographic pieces. In his works, the body become the irradiate core of the artistic research which focuses on analytical exploration of movement as a part of different knowledges.

From 2010 to 2014 he worked as dancer and performer in the company Collettivo Cinetico. His works have been presented in: Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Holland, and via livestreaming in South Korea. He has also collaborated with important international Institutions: Italian Cultural Institute (Paris), Balletto di Toscana (Florence), MUSE Science Museum (Trento), Scuola Normale Superiore University (Pisa), Fondazione Perugia Musica Classica (Perugia), Institute of the Arts (Seoul), IUAV University (Venice).

Behind a semi-transparent veil that divides the scene in half, parts of the body and scene are revealed and concealed. Through movements that expand and contract, the boundaries between proximity and distance dissolve. Gestures, light and sound combine to create sensory illusions that invite you to get lost and meet solitary, travelling figures, engaged in exploring, listening, observing and getting involved.

Deserto tattile explores the theme of solitude and desert, understood both as a boundless space and as an inner condition. It focuses on the memory of the body, the sense of touch and the deep connection between gaze, movement and tactile sensation. These elements help us get in touch with the world and perceive what is invisible. It is a journey between distance and proximity, clarity and darkness, union and isolation, which suspends the daily rhythm until we lose our perception of time and space.

In the spring of 2021 Nicola Galli is in the spaces of Oriente Occidente Studio for an artistic residency to conclude his research for the project Il mondo altrove.

Flanked by three dancers and a dancer, Galli works on a choreographic creation in the form of a danced ritual, which celebrates the motion of an unexplored world. At the base of the creation there is a deep investigation on the indigenous rituals of South America, on symbols and traditions of Japanese Nō theater, and on the obsessive, in some ways mystical and eccentric musical research of the composer Giacinto Scelsi around the spherical idea of sound.

The residency concludes with an open rehearsal for local artists and operators.

Il mondo altrove was presented as a site specific open air project within the programming of Sconfinamenti in the summer of 2021.

Welcoming a new world and opening up to an unknown system means to come into contact, without pre-established hierarchies, with the poetry of an opaque language, whether it belongs to the animal world, the plant world or any alternative culture. Accepting the questioning of something about oneself and rediscovering own humanity in the reflection of the encounter.

The genome is the complex totality of genetic information necessary to generate a living organism; it is a heritage, which has yet to be deciphered, to understand the biography of the world.

The creative process developed by Nicola Galli at Oriente Occidente Studio, during the residency period held in May 2018, deepens this research: the possibility of developing and generating a scenic genome, that is a string of parameters that determine a short performative act.

A danced action based on the interactive relationship between spectator and dancer. Just as every human being possesses a unique and inimitable genetic code, in the same way the spectator is invited to discover the original uniqueness of the performance, thanks to the use of a playful device freely inspired by genomic research: 33 tesserae arranged on a table represent a variety of possible parameters; each spectator can freely select those that will compose his or her own "scenic genome". Every single performance generated by the selection of the tesserae - a scenic metaphor of the randomness with which a real chromosome is composed - will be acted out instantaneously by the dancers, as an artistic outcome, unique and unrepeatable, of the circumstances and the social environment.

The site specific project Genoma Scenico combines dance and science in the sign of genomics and interactive relationship with the public. The project took shape in the context of the exhibition Genoma Umano, realized at MUSE in Trento in 2018.  The performance was realized inside MUSE in May, June, October and November 2018.
